With 31 straight NASCAR series sellouts, Richmond International Raceway is a popular track for fans as well as drivers. This unique ¾ mile D shaped raceway first opened in 1946 as a dirt track. NASCAR first came to Richmond International Raceway in 1953 and has been running there ever since. Richmond International Raceway is the only track to run all of its’ major racing events under the lights. RIR is also known as the last race before the start of the Chase.
Since 1953, Richmond International Raceway has had three name changes, five track configuration changes, one surface change and lights were added to the motor sports facility in 1991.
Richmond International Raceway is the only track where Kyle Petty, his father, Richard Petty and his grandfather, Lee Petty have all won NASCAR series events. Kasey Kahne and Tony Stewart also have won their first career NASCAR Nextel Cup series race at RIR in 2005 and 1999 respectively. Richard Petty holds the record for the most wins at Richmond International Raceway with 13.
Since RIR is a short track, there really is no bad seat; however, be careful when selecting your seat as some views can be somewhat obstructed. The very best seats (and priced as such) at RIR are located in the Commonwealth E-J which has rows up to 43. This section is directly in front of the pits and you have a great view of the whole track. Please note that the Colonial E Section is the non alcoholic section. The most economical seats at RIR are located on the backstretch in Henrico Tower. We would advise not to select a seat in a high row because it difficult to see the cars if they are close to the wall.
